Windows Phone 7 Series, originally codenamed "Photon
On Feb. 15, Microsoft will unveil its latest effort to get back into the game. The renamed Windows Phone operating system, set to be introduced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, will "move the bar forward," said Robbie Bach, president of the company's entertainment and devices division.
It seems as though Microsoft is ready to announce a release date for its Windows Mobile 7 operating platform. Rumor has it that the software itself will be available to Microsoft's handheld hardware partners come this September, which would translate to Windows Mobile 7-based devices by the end of the year at best or early Q1 2011 at worst. Folks speaking other than English or common European languages will be disappointed, as those are the only languages catered to at that point in time. Availability of the Asian localizations are tipped for a 2011 release, so take note if you happen to live in that part of the world. Expect Windows Mobile 7 to ship with an improved user interface, Zune, Xbox Live and Silverlight support. We hope that Windows Mobile 7 will see Microsoft make the most of it in what could be its Waterloo where smartphone OSes are concerned.
We’re in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress, where Microsoft has at long last pulled back the curtains on the next generation of Windows Mobile. Don’t go calling it “Windows Mobile 7″, though – at least not around Microsoft’s folks, who have officially changed the name of the platform to “Windows Phone”.
There are bound to be more details coming out as Microsoft’s press conference continues, but everything we’ve heard and seen so far indicates that the leap from Windows Mobile 6.5 to Windows Phone was pretty massive. The entire system has been rebuilt from the ground up, with an entirely new interface replacing the one that has gone fundamentally unchanged for ten years. Early hardware partners announced include Dell, Garmin-Asus, LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and HP. While they’re hesitant to give any specific dates, Microsoft says to expect Windows Phone handsets to hit the shelves “in time for the Holiday season of 2010″ – which, unless they’re on some sort of crazy, backwards calendar, generally means by the last week in November.
